A large and enthusiastic crowd brought their chairs, rugs and picnic hampers to the Malvern Gardens on Saturday evening, 1 March, to soak up some last rays of Autumn sunshine and to enjoy a concert by the Stonnington Symphony. Host Peter Burch provided some insightful background to each of the numbers played, whilst Matthew Toogood, winner of the inaugural Conductor's prize, directed the Orchestra in a programme of well-known and loved pieces.
The orchestra provided a wide range of instrumental colour, from the high notes of the piccolo; the glistening arpegios of the harp; the batterie of percussion [including brake drum!] through to the deep basso of a tuba. A very powerful brass section was given full rein in the William Tell overture in marked contrast to Leader Edwina Hookey's beautiful solo in Massenet's "Meditation from Thaïs".
The concert was presented by the Stonnington Council as one of its annual outdoor events and thanks go to them, and to all the staging, sound and lighting staff involved in making the concert possible.
